One common scenario on cPanel is the need to convert an Addon Domain into a standalone (independent) cPanel account.
Hosting users often prefer separating addon domains from the main account to enable independent management, resource allocation, and separate login credentials.

In this guide, you’ll learn—step by step—how to convert an addon domain into an independent cPanel account after logging in with WHM root privileges.

🌟 Difference Between an Addon Domain and an Independent cPanel Account

  • Addon Domain: A secondary (or additional) domain attached to an existing primary cPanel account. It shares the same file space and resources, and is managed from the main account.
  • Independent cPanel Account: A separate hosting account with its own file space, resources, FTP, and email accounts.
Converting an addon domain into a standalone account is beneficial for performance, security, and ease of management.

⭐ Steps to Convert an Addon Domain into an Independent cPanel Account via WHM Root

You must have root access to WHM to perform these actions.
If you’re on a shared hosting plan without root access, contact your hosting provider for assistance.
If you manage your own server with cPanel, simply follow the steps below.

📟 Step 1: Log In to WHM with the Root User

📟 Step 2: Convert the Addon Domain to a Standalone cPanel Account

After logging into WHM as root, you can convert your addon domain into a separate cPanel account.

- In the WHM search bar, type Convert Addon Domain to Account.
- The list will display only the domains currently added as addon domains. (Select the domain you want to convert and click Convert.)
- After selecting the addon domain, choose a new package and username. Or you can leave the defaults as-is.
- WHM will configure most settings automatically; you typically only need to select the database.

⚠️ After completing the steps above, you can start the conversion process.
Each detail is demonstrated in the GIF below.
