💾 WHM/cPanel FTP Backup Configuration Guide (Daily, Weekly, Monthly Backups)

For the safety of your website data, creating regular backups is essential.
With WHM/cPanel’s built-in backup system, you can easily configure automatic daily, weekly, and monthly backups and securely transfer them to a remote FTP server.
In this guide, we’ll explain in detail how to configure the WHM Backup Configuration and set up automatic backup transfers to a remote server (FTP/SFTP).

🛠️ Step 1: Log in to WHM as Root

Access your WHM panel by visiting the following link:
yourserverip:2087
Log in using your root username and password to access the control panel.

📁 Step 2: Backup Configuration

After logging into WHM, search for “Backup Configuration” and click the menu option.
From here, you can manage all general backup settings.
Before configuring your backup schedule, you’ll need to set up your Additional Destinations (remote backup destinations).

🌐 Step 2-1: Set Up a Remote FTP Server (Additional Destinations)

WHM allows you to automatically transfer your backups to a remote server.
To set this up, go to the “Additional Destinations” tab:
  1. Destination Type: Select FTP, then click Create New Destination.
  2. Destination Name: Give it a descriptive name (e.g., RemoteBackupServer).
  3. Backup Directory: Directory path for backups (e.g., /backups).
  4. Remote Host: The remote server’s IP address or hostname.
  5. Port: Typically 21 for FTP.
  6. Remote Account Username: Your FTP account username.
  7. Remote Password: Your FTP account password.
  8. Passive Mode: Usually should remain enabled (especially if a firewall is present).
Once the settings are entered, click “Save and Validate Destination” to test and confirm the connection.

✅ Step 3: Enable Backups

Your WHM/cPanel server can now automatically create daily, weekly, and monthly backups and upload them to your configured FTP server.
This setup is one of the best ways to minimize data loss and ensure quick recovery from system failures or attacks.

To begin, simply check the box for “Enable Backups” to activate the backup system.

📆 Choose Backup Frequency

  • Daily Backup: Automatically creates backups every day.
  • Weekly Backup: Creates backups once a week.
  • Monthly Backup: Creates backups once a month.
You can enable one or multiple options depending on your needs.

Once backups are uploaded to the remote FTP server, it’s recommended to remove them from the local server to maintain efficient disk usage.
You can leave the settings as shown below for optimal performance.
