Apple has released the macOS Tahoe 26.1 update for Mac computers. This new version brings general performance improvements and bug fixes, as well as important infrastructure preparations for AI enhancements and some visual updates.
What's new in macOS Tahoe 26.1
Following several weeks of developer and public beta testing, the update introduces small but notable user features. It also lays the groundwork for upcoming AI improvements.
Infrastructure support for AI
With this update, Apple is working to add MCP support to macOS, iPadOS, and iOS. MCP is an open standard developed by Anthropic that allows AI models to interact with user platforms and tools. Additionally, infrastructure improvements were made to support third-party image generation models beyond ChatGPT for Image Playground.
New ‘Tinted’ mode and visual changes
The most noticeable change for users is the addition of the ‘Tinted’ mode alongside the standard ‘Liquid Glass’ appearance. This new mode slightly adjusts visuals to improve contrast. While subtle on macOS, the effect is more pronounced on iPadOS and iOS.
Updated icons
The update also includes two icon changes. First, the ports and holes added in macOS Tahoe 26 were removed from the updated Macintosh HD icon. Second, the Apple TV app icon has been refreshed, reflecting Apple’s new, more vibrant design language and the simplification of the Apple TV+ brand to just “Apple TV.”
