Large files can significantly slow down both backup and restore operations in Plesk Panel.
This not only increases backup time but also consumes unnecessary system resources.
Fortunately, Plesk allows you to easily exclude specific file extensions from the backup process.

In this guide, we’ll explain how to exclude large file types such as .zip, .rar, and .iso from automated backups.

🔗 1. Log In to Plesk Panel

Access your Plesk Panel using your administrator account.

✅ 2. Navigate Through the Menu

Follow this path:
Tools & Settings > Backup Manager > Schedule

jetto-plesk-backup-conf-custom.webp

On the opened page, check the option “Exclude specific files from backup”.
Then enter the following file extensions:
Code:
httpdocs/*.zip
httpdocs/*.rar
httpdocs/*.tar.gz
httpdocs/*.exe
httpdocs/*.gz
httpdocs/*.pst
httpdocs/*.vmdk
httpdocs/*.iso

Once you apply these settings, all files with the specified extensions will be automatically excluded from Plesk’s scheduled backups. This will help you:
  • Significantly reduce backup duration
  • Prevent large, unnecessary files from being archived
  • Speed up restore operations
⚠️ You can customize this list according to your needs and include only the file types that are important for your system backups.
